Hey there, fellow people-champions.
What's been lingering on my mind this week? The power of 1:1s!
I often observe managers eager to improve themselves frequently overlook this potent tactic.
Over my 15-year odyssey in HR, I've stumbled upon countless strategies designed to boost engagement, amplify productivity, and supercharge performance.
Yet, one frequently overlooked tool is the humble 1:1 conversation between managers and their team members. In our current reality, where screens and pixels are gradually diluting our humanity, these personal connections are increasingly crucial. 🌐
Did you know? Research by Gallup reveals that when managers are open and reachable, employee engagement rockets by a staggering 67%! 🚀 Isn't that a figure worth pondering?
But the conversation I'm alluding to isn't just your run-of-the-mill, transactional talk. It's about journeying beneath the surface, uncovering the genuine human behind the corporate mask. Ask about Aunt Linda's daring expedition or how they're navigating the notorious "terrible twos." Remember, you're dealing with humans first, employees second. 👨 👩 👦 👦
Here's the thrilling part - as you invest time in the person, you're inadvertently investing in the employee. A Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology study shows that psychological safety, fostered through authentic human interactions, directly correlates with enhanced team learning behaviour and performance. 🎯
As a manager, don't fear the mirror.
Regular introspection and asking for feedback demonstrates your strength and openness to growth. This habit creates an atmosphere of transparency and mutual respect, supercharging team dynamics. 💪
Here's some questions to ignite those meaningful 1:1 discussions:
Beyond work, how are you today?
What's something you're excited about in your personal life?
How can I offer you better support in your work?
What steps could we take to improve our team dynamics?
How do you feel about your work-life balance currently?
Is anything causing you stress at work?
How do you perceive our communication within the team?
What's something you'd like to learn or work on next quarter?
Could you share a recent accomplishment you're particularly proud of?
How can I make your work more fulfilling or less stressful?
In wrapping up, the magic of 1:1s isn't just about ticking tasks off a list. It's about nurturing a human connection.
As an HRBP who profoundly believes in empathy and connection, I challenge all leaders to harness the power of 1:1s to elevate their team's success and engagement.
So, are you prepared to be the one who reintroduces the human touch into management? 🏆
Best,
V.
